Using Longitudinal Complex Survey Data
نویسنده
چکیده
Common features of longitudinal surveys are complex sampling designs, which must be maintained and extended over time; measurement errors, including memory errors; panel conditioning or time-in-sample effects; and dropout or attrition. In the analysis of longitudinal survey data, both the theory of complex samples and the theory of longitudinal data analysis must be combined. This article reviews the purposes of longitudinal surveys and the kinds of analyses that are commonly used to address the questions these surveys are designed to answer. In it, I discuss approaches to incorporating the complex designs in inference, as well as the complications introduced by time-in-sample effects and by nonignorable attrition. I also outline the use and limitations of longitudinal survey data in supporting causal inference and conclude with some summary remarks. 305 A nn ua l R ev ie w o f St at is tic s an d It s A pp lic at io n 20 15 .2 :3 05 -3 20 . Using marginal mean models with data from a longitudinal survey having a complex design: some advances in methods
In recent years, longitudinal surveys, where sample subjects are observed over two or more time points, are being undertaken by government agencies in order to provide longitudinal data for analytic studies and to aid in the development of public policy. At Statistics Canada, for example, the National Population Health Survey (NPHS), the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY...
متن کاملDesign-based versus Model-based Methods: a Comparative Study Using Longitudinal Survey Data
Survey data analysis using complex sampling designs ought to account for clustering, stratification and unequal probability of selection. Design-based and model-based methods are two commonly used routes taken to account for such survey designs. Several studies of cross-sectional survey designs have shown that these two approaches provide similar results when the model fits the data well. The p...
متن کاملTransition Models for Analyzing Longitudinal Data with Bivariate Mixed Ordinal and Nominal Responses
In many longitudinal studies, nominal and ordinal mixed bivariate responses are measured. In these studies, the aim is to investigate the effects of explanatory variables on these time-related responses. A regression analysis for these types of data must allow for the correlation among responses during the time. To analyze such ordinal-nominal responses, using a proposed weighting approach, an ...
متن کاملThe pseudo-GEE approach to the analysis of longitudinal surveys
Longitudinal surveys have emerged in recent years as an important data collection tool for population studies where the primary interest is to examine population changes over time at the individual level. Longitudinal data are often analyzed through the generalized estimating equations (GEE) approach. The vast majority of existing literature on the GEE method, however, is developed under non-su...

Statistics Canada National Population Health Survey (NPHS) data were used to trace longitudinal changes in the mental health of immigrant women. In the NPHS a member from each household was randomly chosen to participate in this longitudinal survey. We explored the moderating affects of different risk factors on immigrant womens mental distress, which was categorized as a dichotomous variable:...
